Once Upon A Bookcase: May

This is my second and last Once Upon A Bookcase phone case subscription box. These run about $26 plus shipping which works out to about $32 in the end. You get a bookish phone case as well as 3-4 other bookish items within the same theme.

I signed up for the Anything & Everything box (you can get Manly Man or Girly Girl too). This month was Peter Pan themed. This black tote was included in the box.

As well as this faux leather scroll type pencil holder that features a map of Neverland.

I thought it was cool for sure, but I may end up using for paintbrushes or just giving it to Savanna.

The phone case itself is blue and white with some pearlization and sheen to it. It looks very nice, but I am not a huge Peter Pan fan. I will use it in order to get my money's worth, but I won't be grinning like a maniac over it.

I used my Beauty and the Beast case for a full month and there is definite wear and tear. The flap is shredding, exposing the cardboard underneath, the thin plastic type fabric is wearing off the edges. It is just not holding up.

I did see that you can buy just the cases from Chick Lit Designs on Etsy, thanks to a commenter on here but they are $29 each plus shipping and it equals about $41, all said and done. That is a lot for a phone case that does not hold up for more than a month. I canceled my subscription. My phone is back to wearing my Society 6 Harry potter case. Have you signed up for any cool sub boxes lately? Anything bookish tickling your fancy?

  1. I got super excited when I saw this was Peter Pan themed. I've never paid much attention to Peter Pan, don't think I've ever seen the Disney version, don't think I even know the story. But very recently, just out of curiosity, I got Pan from Netflix and enjoyed it. AND, at the same time, that song Lost Boys that's popular now really sucked me in. But I think it's a darker, more serious version of Peter Pan that I'm desiring, if that's possible. lol

'Priceiswong' on YouTube has a vlog showing pillows she made out of fandom tote bags. It's a really cool idea and I think my Game of Thrones tote might be made into a pillow. =)

    1. You don't happen to have an iPhone 6 do you?? If so, this is totally yours. I LOVE Hook, the one with Robin Williams, and of course I love the sassy mermaids in the original cartoon as well as the cartoon itself, but it is not something I fangirl over. I will have to watch Pan. We were heavily into X-Files but then we reached the end of season 5 and that is where the actual movie comes out and then it ties back into the series and the movie is not free on Netflix or Amazon so we lost steam. :-/ Maybe it is time to get into something else. Peter Pan can definitely lend itself to a darker side easily.

Oooooo! So cool! That tote is a softer cotton so you could definitely do that. I got it on Etsy at Cool Wear or something like that. This tote isn't cotton, but more like the actual grocery totes that are out there. I am not sure what I am going to do with it yet. Or any of this stuff in this box. Can you tell I am over it? Ugh. Maybe it is my frame of mind right now too. Who knows. Come to think of it... my photos look really dark in this. Maybe it is a reflection of my mind... oh man. Time for me to stop rambling. I'm out.

Have a good day Deb <3

    2. That tote would have made a cute pillow, but I see it's not the kind with handles. She just tucked the handles inside, stuffed it, and sewed the top shut.

No, my phone is a Samsung Galaxy 5S or something like that. =(

I want to see Hook now. And all other Peter Pan movies. I did see Finding Neverland years ago. And this newer Pan is sort of a prequel to the popular Peter Pan story everyone knows, from what I've read. Do you know the song I mentioned? It's sort of slow and sad, a little bit haunting. Ty said there is some theory online that Peter Pan and the Lost Boys are actually all dead, that's why they never grow up. So that, along with the sad song, has me craving a darker version. LOL

    3. I love an easy to make project like that. Have you ever seen the soft leaf placemats at Walmart that come out in the fall? Once I made those into pillows by cutting a small slit on one edge and stuffing it and then sewed it back up. Super easy and cute decorative pillows. And cheap!!! Those placemats were only a couple bucks.

If you know anyone that may want this just let me know.

Hook was really well made and it makes me sad face for Robin Williams when I watch it. I have not heard the Lost Boys song but I will put it on Spotify now. I had heard that same theory as Ty about the lost boys being dead, since they never grow up. But Peter Pan is a little wicked so I could see him as the devil too.

  2. I'm a hardcore Society 6 phone case fan myself. My mom bought me one for Christmas literally 3+ years ago and I love it so much that I always go back to it. I've dropped it on the floor countless times and it's always protected my phone. It's just now starting to show signs of wear and has a small crack on a corner. It sucks to spend good money on a poorly made product. :/

    1. Me too!!! I have bought many a phone case on Etsy but nothing really compares to my Society 6 one. It has great protection like you said and I love the little bit of cushion it has on the back. I have a tiny bit of scratching and some wear on one corner but it is a workhorse without being bulky. And all those AMAZING artists to pick from?! What is not to love?

It really does suck. I probably wouldn't be some bummed about it if it wasn't so much money. Now I look at that $64 I spent on two boxes and wish I had bought two cases and a mug from Society 6. They have nice coupon codes and frees shipping deals. I loved your Charleston pics on IG. My sister is thinking of moving there once she gets her teaching certificate. I am excited for her. I hope your move is going well. <3

  3. Well, it was fun while it lasted, the subscription box and phone cases I mean. PS, I do have an IPhone 6 if you don't find another home for it. :) I am considering canceling a subscription box; my Native War Paints polish box. I liked the first two boxes contents quite a lot, but the third box was a bit of a let down to me. As much as I love looking forward to that surprise in the mail every month, I'm trying to be budget conscious and realizing if I'm going to spend the money it should be on polishes I know I love. The positive side is that I found out I absolutely love their top coat and cuticle oils, and they're putting some of it on clearance tomorrow, so I think I'll pick you those and cancel the box.

I'm having many great meltings lately. Today I have Haley's Heavenly Scents Pink Chiffon Lavender Birthday Cake in the warmer. It's so good! Ever tried any of her scents?

    1. So far out of all the sub boxes I have tried (many!) the only one I am sticking with is Olfactif. I just love it. Budget is the name of the game too. I like to keep them around or under $20/month so the big ticket ones are a little much for me. A good topcoat is important. Right now I am using Essie's Good To Go that I picked on a heavy discount at a beauty expo in Orlando.

Glad your melting is going well! Pink Chiffon Lavender Birthday Cake sounds amazing. I have tried HHS many times in the past. I used to haul like a beast from her. She has such an extensive scent list and really does certain scents well. For some reason I can never get her stuff to throw for very long. They tend to be like fireworks, really strong but very short lived. I had a few duds too that never threw anything at all. So in the end I just moved on. She has a ton of followers and does really well. I do recommend her to try at least once. Her prices are great too. I fondly remember overdosing on her Grandma's Crack bread and blending it with everything under the sun. I also enjoyed her pink sugar blends, noel blends, serendipity blends, and amazing bakery.

  4. I'm not really into Peter Pan, but this stuff looks pretty cool. Sorry the cases don't seem to hold up though.

We saw Pan in the theater a few months back. The girls really liked it, especially Savannah, but I thought it was just ok. I always liked Hook and the Disney version of Peter Pan.

I'm finally going to try a bookish subscription - I signed up for Owlcrate. We'll see how it goes! :)

    1. Hook! Yes! Loved that movie.

I cannot wait to hear what you think about Owl Crate!!! I want to try it so bad but need to wait a while. Maybe this fall or winter. Please let me know how it is! And if you keep it I would love to use a referral link or something to give you credit.
