Band of Bloggers: January, 2017 Volume 13

Hello, dear friends! We all here at the Band of Bloggers would like to welcome you to a brand new year. We hope it will be full of good health and much happiness, and of course a plethora of fragrance.

Let's kick off the new year but asking what your fragrant plans are for 2017. Are you trying new vendors, going on a low-buy or no-buy, or planning on burning more candles? Do you dream of new wax blends, trying out incense or something entirely different? Are perfumes, indie bath and body or artisan body care on your list? Or do you plan on making your own home made brews?

I probably should be on a low-buy for at least two months, but Candles From the Keeping Room opens January 27th, so yeah. There's that. But once I melt through some of my current stash I do plan on ordering from Alamo Candelaria (missed Kyme's wax), Candy Panda, and a few other vendors. I would love to try some new to me vendors too.
As far as bath and body, I would love to order from Handmade in Florida soon, FuturePrimitive, Dirty Goat Soap Co. and Bathhouse Soapery. I am open to cruising new bath and body vendors a bit.
Perfumes from Sonoma Scent Studio, Solstice Scents, and Serge Lutens are high on my wishlist. I would love to sample other niche and artisan perfume houses as well.
Yes I am the one who wrote this prompt and incense is striking my fancy. Japanese incense and any others I can search out would be cool to burn this year for something a little different.
As far as candles I am jonesing to try out Atelier's new candles at Sephora, maybe one or two other artisan perfume house candles too (Malle? HA! I wish.) like Tocca or Ellis Brooklyn.
Whew. Boy am I ambitious. But it will be an adventure trying to say the least.

And do tell us what your aromatic plans and goals for 2017 include!

We, sadly, have had a few bloggers lay down their pens. And they will be deeply missed. However, we are welcoming some new bloggers to this motley and aromatic group.

  1. Ha, the rest of us are low key, no-buys, taking it easy, and here is Julie chomping at the bit and flying out of the gate! She wears her enabler crown proudly!

    1. Lol! What can I say? I am incorrigible. Or hot mess. Either one. I will take any crown you want to bestow upon my brunette brow. And wear it proudly. <3

  2. I have been on a low buy for several months. I have made a huge dent in my wax which is wonderful, and now I have more room to hold other stuff. I am imagining myself continuing the low buy because I still have hoards of wax to use. I don't burn candles, so there's that, and I was thinking about incense-seems like something different. But one thing I will continue doing (and maybe do more of) is diffusing essential oils. I also want to make my own room sprays once I use the commercial ones I have now. I'm not sure what I'm going to do in reference to perfume. There are a few I want to try, but then again I have several that aren't getting love now.

Great post, I continue to look forward to your blog this year. You are by far one of my favorite bloggers. Happy 2017 Julie!

    1. Wow! Excellent job, Juliana!! If you decide to get into incense and find any treasures please let me know. Would you make your room sprays out of essential oils too? I have several larger bottles of essential oils that I was going to use for making wax but that has not worked out like I wanted so I thought of using them for something else. Maybe room spray would be nice. Which perfumes do you have that are collecting dust?

Thank you!! That is very kind! I love following along on your adventures through IG. <3 I hope you have a fabulous 2017 too! Hug all the birch trees you can for me.

  3. "Probably should be on a low-buy" *has expansive and detailed plans for a fragrant year* Hmmm... LOL <3
I'm kicking myself right now. I had every intention of picking up a 60ml Snowshoe Pass from Snowshoe Scents but I waited too long. Alas, that beauty is out of stock.
I've always thought about trying out incense again, but I grew up with lots of friends and family loving some pretty generic incense scents so I'm stuck in the mentality of "there isn't a lot of variety."

    1. Yezzzzz.... LOL! Hence the word "probably." Snowshoe Pass is such a nice one. I drained my sample pretty fast. I would like to try Snowmint Mallow too. I saw Sandra loving on that one.

I have tried one or two incense types in the past but I have a feeling I am missing out on some good stuff somewhere. Like Japanese incense and such. Not the typical Nag Champa (which I do like at any rate but Adam does not). I grew up smelling the incense cones at my grandmother's. She had those cool clay decorated miniature dishes that were studded with mirror chips and beads that she burned them on.

  4. You will have a wonderfully scented Year Julie! My scented goals for 2017 are to focus on beautiful things. I have so much stuff that smells good, but just sits in a closet and doesn't serve any other purpose unless actively being melted. I want beautiful candles that I can display and that also fill a room with fragrance, without even being lit. I also want to maybe try getting back into blogging, perhaps combining my love for home fragrance with my love for home decor and real estate. We shall see!

    1. I hope so! And I am sure you will too. I can see why you would lean towards candles. You are right, they are more functional as far as offering more than one utility. And really, is there anything sweeter than candle light? I would flip if you blogged again. A lifestyle blog would be amazing. If you do, please send me a link.

  5. Julie - I have tried commenting on your posts in the past, but it never worked. I finally figured it out. I stumbled across your blog a few months ago and have been stalking ever since. One slow day at work, I went back quite far on your blog. After seeing some of your photos, I believe you live in my hometown. I moved from there about 5.5 years ago. Talk about a small wax world. I love your posts and really enjoy them.

If you want to try out new vendors this year, I highly recommend Destination: WAX. Her wax is wonderful and she has great customer service. I ordered 3 times in about a month it was so great.

    Happy blogging!

    1. Welcome Leanne!! I am glad you were able to get it to work. I do find that some of my friends and family who aren't regular blog commenters do have a hard time with commenting. I wish there was something on my end I could do to make it easier but there really isn't. I don't moderate comments or anything, I have it set to as easy as I can. I apologize for the inconvenience. But I am so happy you were able to this time!!! Did you live in central FL? I was born and raised here, moved away for four years for college (go Gators!) then moved back. I taught in Hillsborough county for a while but stayed living in Polk. I only know of one other lady in the wax community from here but we never really talk so I do not know her really. I am glad you are enjoying browsing around. I have had fun blogging over the last few years.

Destination:WAX will be put on my list! I was just browsing and between the Sherlock scents, Country Bumpkin, Cinnamon and Angel, Lavender and Spice and all the woodsy scents, I am SOLD. I will place an order for sure. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for stopping by and I hope to hear from you again!

    2. Julie - The problem I had was with a browser add-on I have installed, Privacy Badger. I think it blocks the connection to my Google account for authentication. I disabled it and voila!! So, if you hear of other people having issues, might want to have them check their ad-blockers, etc on their browsers. I am in IT, you would think I would have checked that months ago. As for where I am from, I do not want to say the actual city in case you don't want it mentioned, but I think it is the same city you are, or you live very near to it. Let's just say I graduated from GJHS. If you know the initials, you know :-)

And I am so glad that you took a look at DW. She also sells directly via email for a little less than Etsy, or she was a few weeks ago. I can't wait to hear what you think.

    3. Ah! The old pop-up blocker. I will try and remember that. Thank you!

Oh my goodness! Yes! I graduated GJHS in '99. I was in marching band and FFA and a nerd who kept to herself mostly. Did you go about that time? High school was tough for me at times. I enjoyed SWMS much better and then later on college. I pretty much felt like a misfit. But hey. I survived.

I will see if I can email her first then. Nothing like saving a few pennies. Usually Etsy kills you with shipping anyway so maybe the shipping will work out better that way too. Do you have any particular scents you recommend?

    4. Ok, so the wax world is even smaller than I once believed. I graduated in 1998. Whoa... almost creepy :-) I was definitely in the loner/nerd group, and not much has changed since. I didn't go to SWMS, I went to LHMS. My parents, sister, and niece all still live there so I do get to visit at least once a year. That city is sure changing, though the traffic is just as bad.

As for scents from DW, I can tell from your posts that we don't really enjoy similar genres of smells. I hate bakery and mints, for example. I really love all of her Pear scents, they are so crisp and fresh. Anything fruity I tried is wonderful and the fresh scents are great. She is very quick to respond if you have any questions about specific scents.

    5. I will have to try her pear then! I enjoy nice fresh scents as long as they don't smell like strong detergent.

  7. You might be onto something with the incense. Japanese incense seems like a cool style to try. I'd love to find an antique incense burner similar to one my friend's mom had when I was a young punk teen. Unfortunately, we broke it while dyeing our hair cranberry colors one day, maybe I can find two and send it along to make amends 20 yrs later? I'm cruising small vendor body care too, largely thanks to you:)

    1. If you find any Japanese incense, holler! Awwww that would be so sweet to gift her a replacement so long after. It would make me laugh out loud to get something like that. Did you dye your hair to match the band? Love the Cranberries. Have fun scouting some handmade body care! I would love to read your thoughts of any you try out.
