Guys. Only one week of school left before Thanksgiving Break.

We picked up our turkey and a few supplies. I am still not 100% sure what I will be cooking but I am looking forward to it. There is a mild bit of family drama that keeps niggling the back of my mind over a miscommunication back in September that just won't heal. I have offered my apologies but they are being ignored.

My husband keeps telling me to not let it bother me but it does. I hate the feeling of not being forgiven. Of rifts not being repaired. But if I have learned anything through marriage class, it is that you cannot change anyone but yourself. So I just need to let it go. If they wish to be in the same room with me once again, I guess it will happen. I just need to learn to be ok with it if it doesn't.

So I resort back to counting my blessings and trying not to dwell on the negatives. Speaking of counting blessings... the next melting basket, the Thanksgiving one, will feature our family's Thankful Tree.

In the meantime I will be petting and squeezing on this furry friend. And engaging in some retail therapy. I may have placed my most epic Candles From The Keeping Room order to date. And I ordered a little from Rosegirls and my first Candy Panda scrub. I hope your week is beautiful my dears.

I am a little sad I only have about 3 Halloween tarts left to carry over for next year. They are the few LSC tarts I bought in the last order. But maybe getting to buy all new ones will be nice.

If you would like me to review any of these scents in depth, I would be happy to just for you! Leave a comment below letting me know which one beckons to be discussed. And hey. I will talk more about one of the above vendors in a soon-to-be Fall Fun Series post. So keep those peepers peeled.

I am in full thrall of Thanksgiving and Christmas right now. I want it to be a happy and enjoyable time but I think I have been sabotaging my body too much to really be able to enjoy it. My sugar consumption is abominable. And I think it is making me irritable, forgetful and headache ridden. My goal for the next few weeks is to reign that in a bit so I can feel good and enjoy my favorite time of year. Plus who wants diabetes to be their 36th birthday present?

We do have the Thankful tree up, though I was a few days late. Some Halloween doodads were scored at Target for 70% off and are now awaiting departure to the attic. Christmas shopping (and carol listening- don't judge) has commenced. Thanksgiving menu planning slides into priority number one right now. Well, after my health.

Adam and I are looking forward to seeing the new Fantastical Beasts movie soon. Date night!
Savanna attended her second Pokemon tournament and scored her first win.
Scarlette overflows with joy from her school research projects and friendships at the moment. They have these cafes where the kids display their work and all walk around leaving comments on a sheet of paper next to the students' work. She enjoys reading what her friends write.

How is your November unfolding? Do you have a sweet tooth you battle? Any fun plans brewing?

Savanna has reached that age of peer influence. I find I am that parent who's child is the only one that does not have this or that item that everyone else in the class enjoys. In this case, Pokemon Go.

Savanna has been into Pokemon for quite a few years now. She has the cards and battles with them. She has shirts, stuffed animals, pencils and paraphernalia. She watches the movies and TV shows. I send my bestie Ashely money once in a blue moon to pick up cool Pokemon things in Japan. She is utterly Pokemon spoiled.

I just can't let her play the game.

I have limited data that I squeak by with each month as it is.
I have a paranoia about turning on my location services.
I tried to download it once for her to try and it froze up my phone several times before the game even popped up.

It just isn't working for me.
And last night she cried. She never cries about things like that. But through tears she told me how all her friends talk about it and she feels left out. How she really isn't even interested in the game but only wants to play because everyone else does.

And I found myself telling her that unfortunately, this won't be the last time that she feels this way.

It was one of those moments that is a shock to my system. Where I realize very clearly that she has grown into the next phase closer to being a teenager. When previously she could care less what was popular or in style. She wants to fit in. And I am in the way of that.

It is what it is.

What was the one thing you had to have in school that everyone else was sporting? Or place everyone was going, or thing everyone was doing? It was cell phones in high school and college for me. I was only allowed to have a pager or phone cards. I didn't get my first cell phone until I got my first job as a teacher. The Nextel walkie-talkie. Remember those?

Whew. If you can tell from my basket pic, I am scrapping this post together by the skin of my teeth, using the last dregs of my energy. Totally camera phoned it in. We are only midway through the week but it has been a packed one.

I am loving my new job at the new school. The kids are awesome. Even with running on fractured sleep I have had a great experience.

Scarlette was ill for a handful of days, needing various IV fluids and such for a possible salmonella poisoning. She had quite a few late night/early morning calls for help that had Adam and I up and rubbing her back, cleaning her and bringing her fever down. She missed her first two days of school but is healing now and went to class as an official 2nd grader. She is growing into a helpful and kind snuggle-bug.

Savanna loves her new 9-12 year old class (4th grade for her), her new teacher and new classroom. Montessori does 3 year cycles: 3-6 year olds in the same class (primary class), 6-9 year olds (lower elementary class), then 9-12 year olds. Savanna moved to the upper elementary with the big kids and it blows my mind. Her feet are the same size as mine now, she is reading over 800 page books, and she Skypes with her friends but she still loves to have me lay in bed and talk before she goes to sleep and will hold my hand in public.

This school year has started like a hurricane but I think it has finally settled into the new rhythm. The floors may need sweeping and the dishes may be dirty in the sink but I am happy in my work and the girls are both healthy at the moment. Before my eyes get much heavier I think I had better schedule this post to go out in the morning and call it a night. How has your week been going?

Shannon has really been knocking me out with her incredible scents and throw the past few openings. If you would like any of these reviewed in depth, please let me know which ones in the comments.

We had a Red Tailed Hawk visitor last week.

I think he wanted to remind me to pause and observe more often in my life. My feet too frequently marching with swift purpose, my eyes often on my phone or next destination, the cogs of my brain rotating around to-do lists or superfluous things. He sat there waiting for me to see him, to be present.

We are going camping this weekend to swim in some springs and enjoy a last summertime adventure. I will carry my camera of course, but I will be taking more moments of rest and mindfulness. Once I head back to work I will eventually need to get back to a slower posting schedule, about 3-4 times a week, especially as I learn these new ropes.

How do you create mindful moments in your life? Do they come naturally or do you have to plan them? How is your August fleshing out? Clinging to summer or ready for fall?

Universal Voodoo: Wax Tarts

Universal Voodoo first came across my computer screen years and years ago when I used to read Isabel's Musings of a Muse makeup blog. She enjoys a good wax tart from time to time and blogs about them. Universal Voodoo sprang up on my Facebook feed a few weeks ago and I decided to go ahead and place an order. The owner, Tod, told me I was his first official Etsy order. He does have his own webstore here as well.

Tod sells his wax tarts as 2 ounce shapes that are made of, vegetable wax, beeswax and botanical butters. He uses a paraffin free blend. He recommends cutting them into 1/4 or 1/2 for use. The prices of the scents vary due to fluctuations in the fragrance oils used.

I ordered five scents and he threw in a free sample miniature wax tart and four perfume oil sample vials. The packaging came in a lovely rustic burlap sack, with each tart double bagged.

Wayward Gravy- Notes: Indonesian spices, herbal honey, fermented fruits, sugared cream. $3.95
Oooooooo yum. This reminds me of Mexican tamarind candy. A medley of spices, as at a bazaar: smokey cumin, hot cayenne, curry, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice. Sweet and savoy masala flavorings merge with dried and stewed fruits. Incredible.

Horizontal Haze- Notes: Amber woods, moss, patchouli, orange peel, clove. $4.95
Magical. An earthy, spiced blend that evokes images of an enchanted forest dwelling under a sharp crescent moon. Peeling white curls of birch bark, springy fairy filled moss, blacked patchouli leaves curling under and bits of dried orange peels and wooden flower shaped cloves that rattle around an acorn shell, an offering for a sprite.

Porridge- Notes: Oats, raisins, walnuts, cinnamon, brown sugar, maple, cream. $2.95
Porridge that will stick to your ribs. This is not from a puny Quaker oatmeal insta-oatmeal packet. This rustic parritch was cooked to nourish not only the body but the whole being. Raisins and walnuts waft up first, raisins so dark and plump they masquerade as dates. Softly dusted with cinnamon and nutmeg and creamed with milk and dark brown sugar, this oatmeal is utterly delicious. There is almost a homemade banana bread suggestion to it. I love it. I cut it in half and put about one ounce in each warmer. Can I tell you I should have listened to Tod and cut it into quarters?! It threw really strong so I had to turn it off after a bit to just enjoy the scent that was lingering in the air. I will definitely be cutting the rest into 1/2 ounce portions. The smell was even more rich when warmed. Very nice.

Beaten Path- Notes: Heirloom apple, white birch, bayberry, orange peel, spice. $3.95
This is Christmas. This is a winter woods walk. This is brilliant. Slightly camphorous bayberry and birch bark are sweetened by dried apples and oranges, spiked with dusty cinnamon bark curls. A uniquely blended and sophisticated take on a holiday favorite. I will be ordering more of this one.

Old Fashioned- Notes: Vanilla cream, cardamom seed, clove bud. $4.95
This one is all about the vanilla cream. The cardamom and clove only very minimally add depth to the vanilla cream. This is one incredible scent. It almost has a custard or creme brûlée texture, that richness of egg yolk and decadence of aged vanilla bean paste. Can I eat this? I want to eat this.

Free Sample:
Strange Music- Notes: Honey tobacco, spiced rum, vetiver, chocolate, chestnut. ($3.95 if purchased in full size)
Strange music, strange bird, indeed. This is one of those scents that the more I smell it, the more I like it. Very complex and unique. At first I get the chocolate and I want to turn away, but then I realize it is the expensive Dutch dark cocoa powder that I love and not the cloying Tootsie Roll or anemic Hershey's cocoa powder chocolate smells that I detest. Once I stay long enough to seek past the chestnut rich cocoa, I can detect a swarthy pirate imbibing his rum and toking a small teak pipe. Hey there sexy pirate. Do you often come here for chocolate? Sweet and smoky vetiver round out the  tableau and I have decided I am going to buy this in a full size. The pirate made me do it.
The 0.4 ounce bee medallion melted in my bedroom with a strong throw. I had to turn it off an hour into it and just enjoy the ghost of the scent that manifested from when it was warmed, otherwise it would have gained flesh and started waltzing about my room as a corporeal being.

Free samples:
Afterglow- Notes: Ginger, ylang ylang, jasmine, lemongrass, patchouli, spice.
Piquant ginger and lemongrass are mellowed by powdery patchouli and tropical white flowers lend sensuality. The spice is subtle and airy. As the fragrance melds with the skin I catch more lemony dew drops on my tongue with the rooty sharpness of pale ginger shards as a backnote. This does remind me of the sun warmed tropical afterglow of a day well spent on an island.

Night Swimming- Notes: Saltwater, driftwood, night blooms, patchouli, neroli, dark myrrh.
The aquatic nature of the saltwater and driftwood are tamed by sultry orange blossom and jasmine while the dusky myrrh almost feels leathery. This is a naughty nocturnal skinny dip, though the star cooled water feels refreshing, there is flesh against flesh and a white flower in your hair to perfume the moment.

Curved By Love- Notes: Amber musk, sandalwood, chocolate, patchouli, carnation rose, spice.
Peppery carnation and the ever majestic rose are darkened with dripping amber and smoldering patchouli. Chocolate adds a touch of sweet powder but never does this turn gourmand on my skin. Smooth sandalwood features in the drydown, with the amber musk and ever present spiced patchouli for a menage a trois of base notes.

Incensual- Notes: Vanilla, sandalwood, jasmine, ylang ylang, frankincense, orris root.
Creamy vanilla drenched ylang ylang melts into tarry orris and sweet frankincense resin. An alter hidden in an Amazon rainforest, where incense and tropical ferns and flowers mingle in sweetness.

The pricing can seem a bit off putting initially, but really, you do want to cut these up into a few pieces. The throw is great and the scents are high quality and uniquely sophisticated. These are no single fragrance oils that any Joe can get online for a song. There is care, thought and quality in these blends. I am absolutely going to go back and order one of each scent. I am very happy with my order and would highly recommend trying Universal Voodoo. The perfume oils smell lovely as well. Have you found any Etsy treasures lately? Do you enjoy unique scents such as these? Which of these would you most be likely to melt?
