Vegan deodorant... yep. Let me preface this review by saying that since I have had children, I seriously perspire. If I have a white shirt that I adore, I have to wear it sparingly if I want it to last a few years without getting stained. Gross I know. But those are the breaks. I will take sweaty pits and my lovely babies any day. I also gave them my bladder strength and luscious locks and firm... well... I will stop there. As a result, a have to wear heavy duty deodorant, think clinical strength. Regular 'ol Sure was not cutting it any longer. All of this to say I was highly skeptical of this product, but ever the adventurer, I gave it a go.
I am glad I read up on The Soap Box Company's site about this product or I might not have been able to stick with it. Here is what the site has to say:
This natural deodorant is not only Vegan, but it's baking soda and aluminum free formula is kind to the environment and your skin. How it works: Unlike commercial antiperspirants, natural deodorants do not prevent you from sweating; rather, they form a barrier on the skin which gently absorbs moisture and odor.
To Use: Gently apply a VERY thin layer; only a little is needed. Allow to dry before dressing. If you accidentally over apply and it feels "wet", gently rub it in. If your body is used to commercial antiperspirants, you may sweat more than usual when you stop using them. This may take a few days to a few weeks to normalize.
NOTE: During the adjustment period, you may need to reapply your natural deodorant throughout the day to avoid body odor. Please realize that this is normal, your body is adjusting to the lack of chemicals, and it doesn't mean the formula isn't working.
Ingredients: Castor oil, Candelilia wax, Soy wax, hemp butter, shea butter, kaolin clay, arrowroot powder, fragrance.
I started using on Saturday. It feels like you are rubbing lip balm in your arm pits. I never really got the "drying" sensation and I don't really have time to stand with my arms out waiting for that to happen in my morning routine. The girls and cat have urgent needs I must fulfill first thing upon the sunrise. The first 4 to 5 days were an adjustment period. If I felt yucky I would re apply. This seemed to help. At day 5 I did give it a little test as I was ironing, basting and getting ready to quilt a quilt. It wasn't too bad. I did not gag anyone in my general vicinity (and let me tell you if anyone will let you know that you stink it is a 5 year old). I did notice that the perspiring did decrease as I used it. I did not have that "fresh from the shower" under arm smell that standard deodorant imparts but I still smelt nice. Like warm skin. The Moroccan scent did not leave me redolent of a Marrakech market overflowing with spices. It was just a sweet innocuous scent. I am continuing to use this and am considering ordering more. They have very generous sample sizes (which is what this is- 15 times more product than a Chapstick) for $3.75.

I took the natural deodorant plunge and am using the folksy-sounding Mum Mum's Crafts these days. It is an opaque formula but up in the north that is just fine most of the year. I read coconut oil is antibacterial and might help it work longer.
ReplyDeleteLive Beautifully has a clear formula and more fun scents. I am using Urban Breeze right now, which although labeled for men reminds me of Secret, from the floral. They're having a holiday sale too, I might have to try their travel sizes to try other scents.
Jean, it was a leap for me. But it paid off. The more I use it, the more comfortable I am with it. Thank you for the recs. I will browse around and check them out. Hope you have a lovely holiday weekend! Happy 4th!
DeleteP.s. I just got an email with another coupon code at the other Arcana stockist, The Rhinestone Housewife. $5 off, no minimum, or $10 off above $25 with code SUMMERSALE2014 through Wednesday.
ReplyDeleteWow Jean, those are some good deals! Off to look! Thank you!
Delete"It feels like you are rubbing lip balm in your arm pits." I just got a mental-feel-al image of that experience, yuck! LOL. At least this smelled nice, but the beginning adjustment period might be problematic for some people if they don't read the instructions! My mom uses aluminum-free deodorant because she thinks it's better for her, do you agree about that in general? Maybe I will have to check this out!
ReplyDeleteLol!! It is a bit weird at first! Very strange for me at first. You know to be honest, I am open minded about trying new things and understand that there might be strong evidence against using aluminum in deodorant but I did not try it with that concern in mind. I feel like there is risk in just living life. I do not buy organic produce but I make sure my family eats fruits and vegetables. We watch TV but we also play outside. I guess all this to say, I do not feel strongly that people should stop using antiperspirants. I will probably go back and forth using whichever product I feel I need. Might be all natural, it might not. :-)
