ScentSationals: A couple fall scents... and a Fall Tag!

Rustic Cabin Kitchen from ScentSationals smells fan-freaking-tastic. As soon as I saw the name and label art I was yearning to be back in the mountains tucked away into a wooden cabin in the Smokies. This is predominantly a dark woodsy scent with blackened vanilla amber and a touch of earthiness that is probably a pinch of patchouli. I don't pick up on much spice but it may be there warming the edges. It throws beautifully strong and smells amazing. I have already melted a whole clamshell and now I am working on one my friend Deb sent me. <3 ($2 each at Walmart)

Honey Crisp Cider from ScentSationals hopped into my arms at Walmart as well. This is a spiced cider for sure and I love that about this one. No shy guys here. And the apples do indeed smell of sweet nectar filled Honeycrisp. This may be due to some pear in the scent. I love the light golden tones of this cider blend. It makes my mouth water both in its sweetness, spice and tartness. I got a solid medium-strong to strong throw of fall fruity brightness. The spices settled and just added a bit of warmth.

I would happily buy both of these again. Great scents. Have you tried either?

My friend Deb and I wanted to do a Fall Tag so without further ado:

1. What is your favorite thing about fall?
Can't do just one! I love how the weather is less muggy and the occasional cool breeze comes through. I love the spices and fruits and scents of the season. I love the baking bug I catch and the yearn for coffees and teas. I love decorating. I love approach of the holidays.

2. Do you get fall colors where you live?
The Sycamore leaves change to yellow and the cypress trees turn brown and the oak leaves will start to turn brown and acorns fall but that is about it. It is more of a subtle transition here in the sub-tropics.

3. Favorite fall scent (wax, or anything)?
Apples and spice. Pumpkins and spice. Woods. Ambers. Deep vanillas and patchouli. I want to wrap up in all the dark sticky scents and slather them on. I do love rich tobacco and smoky scents this time of year as well. I love my Sonoma Scent Studio Forest Walk and Winter Woods and Tabac Aurea this time of year as well as the Nocturne Alchemy Pumpkin Library scents and Arcana's Undead Gentleman and honey scents.

4. Favorite fall food or drink?
I have been enjoying Nestle's Natural Bliss coffee creamer in Pumpkin Spice with my Fresh Market Pumpkin Spice coffee. I also am loving my Wick & Fable Winter chai tea with a touch of cream. For food it would be homemade apple pie and pumpkin cookies.

5. Football.....yay or nay?
Yay for the background noise it provides letting me know fall is here. Adam watches every game that comes on and I am usually right beside him reading. Unless it is the Vikings then I am rooting for Deb's sake or the Browns and then I am ribbing Adam.

6. Do you rake, jump in, or burn piles of leaves?
None. Not enough trees around any home I have ever lived in to even buy a rake. Sad I am sure. If I could though I would burn.

7. Haunted house or corn maze?
Corn maze because I am a scaredy cat. I used to go to Universal Studio's Halloween Horror Nights but good grief did it freak me out. Corn mazes are unbearably hot around here so we usually end up cutting through the stalks to get the heck out of there.

8. Have you ever gone on a hayride?
Yep! Plenty of times! Quite fun! It does remind me we need to take the girls more often.

9. Cider or hot chocolate?
Both! This year my goal is to make homemade apple cider.

10. Carve a pumpkin or eat pumpkin pie?
Both! The girls and I each have carved our own pumpkins for the past few years now. I look forward to it every year. I also bake homemade pumpkin pies for Thanksgiving each year. Adam looks forward to that.

11. Do you dress up for Halloween?
The girls do and I sometimes do. It depends on what is going on.

12. Candy corn.....yay or nay?
Call me a weirdo. I do enjoy a handful of candy corn each year. <3

13. Favorite Halloween movie?
Hmmm... maybe Nightmare Before Christmas or any Tim Burton movie. I also like that Cartoon Network series "Over the Garden Wall."

14. Scariest movie?
Anything revolving around torture or demons. The Saw movies were gross and brutal and the book and movie Seven and I couldn't finish The Hills Have Eyes when I was pregnant.

15. Halloween or Thanksgiving?
Thanksgiving. I love the food and family. Halloween is fun too though.

16. Do you watch the Macy's parade?
No. We never have time for it as we leave for an annual reunion every year around that time. This year is the first year in about 50 or so that our reunion will be shut down due to the park closing where it has been held since the beginning. So watching Macy's will be the new thing. Plus it will give me a chance to reminisce about the NYC trip I would have just returned from.

17. Apple pie or pumpkin pie?
I would have said pumpkin in the past but apple is gaining steam. Both.

18. White or dark meat?
Both! With extra crispy salty skin.

19. Jellied or real cranberry sauce?
Both! I chill a can and slice it up and make homemade sauce each year. I love cranberry sauce.

20. Will you host or travel for Thanksgiving this year?
Host. Normally we travel for lunch but not this year. I host dinner every year though and invite anyone who wants to attend. We don't have much room but we will fit you in.

Hoping your September is ending well and your October starts festively! Feel free to join in on the tag! What are some of your fall traditions? Find any new great fall drinks, foods, books or movies?

I am trying to rise out of the fog of a strange purgatory we have been floating in the past week.

No school, no power for many, no routine. It was hard to remain constant in anything during those chaotic several days.

Monday saw me headed back to work and I was ready to be there. Rescheduling conferences that were missed, signing up for certification exams and registering for college... again. It all feels surreal and I bit all my nails off worrying about whether I would pass now that I am so far removed from those agriscience days and if I would be able to juggle work, home, family and school again.

But this is my path. I am being stretched again and yes it is uncomfortable at the moment, but new and better and shinier things will come of it.

It is time to remind myself to take one day at a time. One test at a time. One course at a time.

And for something cheerful:

"By all these lovely tokens,
September days are here,
With summer's best of weather,
And autumn's best of cheer."
- Helen Hunt Jackson

How is your September rolling along? Is the fall bringing any changes? Challenges? Stretching?

ScentSationals and Better Homes and Gardens: A Few Fall Scents

I picked up a handful of tarts from Walmart. I had kept reading about all these fabulous fall scents and knew I needed to sniff them out. Forgive my lack of clamshell photos, I just wanted to shoot them naked.

Balsam & Birch (ScentSationals)- Good old evergreen, snow capped with faint sweetness and menthol and pine when melted. Medium-light throw.

Perfectly Pine (ScentSationals)- A much sweeter and mellower evergreen than the above. Christmas trees decked in cotton candy garland and vanilla sugar crystal diamonds, but it turns a little off and plasticky as it melts. Next time I melt it I will temper it with mint or spice. Strong.

Fragrant Woodland Walk (Better Homes & Gardens)- Balsam and spruce, slightly sweet with citrus and golden amber.

Pumpkin Marshmallow Cream (ScentSationals)- Vague pumpkin with a soft back note of vanilla spice and musky tonka beans when melted. A firm medium-strong to strong throw in the kitchen.

Pumpkin S'mores (ScentSationals) duo of Pumpkin Spice and Pumpkin Marshmallow Cream- Same as above but extra spice and richness added with the Pumpkin Spice blended into the Pumpkin Marshmallow Cream.

Crimson (ScentSationals)- A description of cranberry and oak but the cranberries only fleetingly dust the musky woods with tart sugar drops. This veers much closer to mahogany and teakwood. Medium- strong to strong throw.

Incense & Wine (ScentStationals) duo of Nag Champa Incense and Vineyard Sunset- The Nag Champa portion feels a bit more floral than earthy. The Vineyard Sunset side reminds me of mulled wine aged in oak barrels. Nicely done. One cube of each scent threw medium to medium-light in the bedroom but gave me a headache. It could have been how close I was sitting. I will melt these in the larger living area.

Each tart is $2.00 at Walmart. Of this bunch, I would buy Crimson, Incense & Wine, Balsam & Birch, and Fragrant Woodland Walk. Do you enjoy any of these?

We spent last weekend at my in-laws home in southwest Florida. They live right on a canal and have a pontoon boat that we love to take for a ride out into the Gulf with when we visit. This time of year I crave the sunshine and beach. This is when my mermaid soul really thrives.

Lover's Key near Ft. Myers is really an absolutely beautiful state park. All natural and protected, it thrives with flora and fauna. We reach it by boat, passing a tiny island where dozens of dogs frolic in the water.

On our way to Lover's Key we saw a couple of manatees, a few dolphins and a bald eagle. The water was murky with churning and the sky was hazy but the breezes and sunshine made up for the lack of clarity and abundance of grey.

Barnacles, sea shells, horseshoe crabs, driftwood, and seaweed all made an appearance.

Summer is pretty much here in Florida. And I am ready for it.

Do you enjoy the beach? Boating? Parks? Have you found the perfect beach scents for your home or body? I love CB I Hate Perfume's At The Beach 1966 and The Bathing Garden's Sea of Tears. Please share yours.

ScentSationals: White Sandalwood

White Sandalwood from ScentSationals reminds me of Better Homes and Gardens' Soft Cashmere Amber, very much so. I do believe I have read/heard that they are all made by the same company at any rate but not sure why one would be an amber and one a sandalwood. The scent does smell like a beautiful vanilla, blonde woods, amber medly but I suppose it could have a nod of creamy sandalwood as well. It is lovely though and the throw healthy at about a medium-strong. I would repurchase for sure.

ScentSationals: Rose Gold

Rose Gold from ScentSationals caught my attention with its promises of gilded roses everlasting. Once melted the fragrance of sweet roses did emerge, along with peonies, sweet peas and berries. The throw was only about a medium-light to light in my large area rooms. I enjoyed the premise but the results fell flat.

The Bathing Garden- Honeyed Toffee <3 gift
Dessa's Homespun Scents- Cranberry Spice <3 gift
My Blueberry Creme Brulee tart I made.

If you would like to see these reviewed in depth, comment below with your choices. It is a weird haphazard basket of things I have been wanting to melt or craving. I am not sure when I will start to break out the Christmas scents. I don't really have a ton of them, about a melting basket full, but it is kind of late in the game to try and get more unless from a quick TAT vendor. Although I do have some candles. I don't decorate until the day after Thanksgiving but the Christmas tunes are piping out of the TV whenever I get a chance to cook. The Thankful Tree is up.

Scarlette is way more into the Thankful tree this year, understandably, since she can write and spell more independently. Generally, each morning we all write one thing we are thankful for and place it on the tree. I catch them doing more than one leaf, but I don't mind. I let the girls pick their own patterned paper this year, which was a fun way to kick it off. I am looking forward to making the Thanksgiving menu and recipe browsing. Are you decorating for Christmas yet? Is your holiday wax stash ready to go? Do you have any November traditions?

ScentSationals: Baked with Love

Another hit. This ScentSationals Baked With Love is a dual scent clamshell that features Pumkin Sugar Cookies and Cinnamon Pumpkin. I split the bars in half and mixed the two scents among two warmers. The throw was strong and lasted several hours. We could even smell them outside the house when we returned from dinner later last night. These two bars weigh 1.25 ounces each. I believe this was $2? The bakery was not too overpowering but then again I did make pumpkin cookies that day too. I got more of a nice sweet and spiced pumpkin from this. Defintely, definitely a repurchase.

Have you started melting any pumpkin tarts? Which ones are your favorite? My Lasting Scent Candles order arrived and I can't wait to dig in.

So the family and I went to West Palm Beach for the weekend recently. We stayed at Eau Palm Resort gratis due to Adam's ability to play golf and win raffle prizes. The place was stunning, great service, and prices reflected this. And by the end of the trip it ended up costing me more than I had thought in the form of my camera....

I had a ginormous lizard that liked to sunbathe with me.

The Atlantic was lovely, if rough and tar filled. After walking in the water a bit, Adam and I discovered huge globs of oil/tar on our feet that was quite difficult to remove. Very disheartening. I cannot imagine what it is doing to the ecosystem and wildlife. I was also taken surprise by an errant wave that claimed my most favored lens. Disheartening as well. In fact, the squirrel photo below was my last photo taken with my zoom lens that was my birthday/Mother's Day/Christmas all rolled into one about 5 years ago. The Camera Shop man says it is not salvageable. I am now on the look out for a new lens. As a result, my photos are suffering. My stock lens just does not offer the crisp (I LOVED the Vibration Reduction feature), the zoom, or the bokeh that I adore. Please bear with me and my lower quality images as I adjust and scout for a new/used lens.

How was your weekend? Have anything exciting coming up soon?

Some of my Rosegirls labels were turning yellow so I am taking that as my cue to stop hoarding them and start melting. I know for a fact I have had that Ooey Gooey Crackers for at least two years. Part of my Waxy Spring Cleaning. If there is anything you would like to have reviewed, please let me know!

Spring Break is officially on tap. We have some non-fun appointments to keep but I am planning on a beach day trip and lots of outside play for the girls. Also decorating Easter eggs and water sprinkler fun.

I am still plucking away at my Elizabeth I novel. It is written really well, just seriously thick. Savanna and I have incorporated Mommy/Daughter reading time, where we sit side by side and read in tandem. She is reading The Secret Garden for her first Book Club meeting. She will then go to a friend's house with a few other girls who have read it, watch the movie, then have a proper tea in the girl's own secret garden (her mom is a Master Gardener and has amazing plant skills). This makes me unaccountably excited. I secretly hope to raise a bookworm.

Any Spring Break plans? Reading anything good? Do you Spring Clean? Are you playing any April Fool's pranks today? >Darby, did you put your boss' stapler in a jello mold again?<

Better Homes & Gardens and Scentsationals Wax Tarts

I shall stop bemoaning my Walmart's lack of good wax. Some good fairy must have visited recently and magically filled the aisle with the most sweetly yummy scents that I could ever wish upon a star for. I went bananas on that junk. Like level 1 hoarder, so please forgive me. It rarely happens at Walmart.

Sugared Lavender Twist- Do I even have to explain this? This sweet lavender and Pink Sugar delight that has been teasing and taunting the wax community at large? She has finally come out of hiding and darting. She is MINE!!!! The unicorn is mine! >preciousssssss<  Reviewed previously.

Sun-Lit Strawberry Patch- Strawberry candy. To the letter. I used to think Pretty In Pink was full of strawberry candy, but side-by-side I can get the heavy dose of vanilla musk that resides in PiP.

Pretty In Pink- Reviewed previously, cotton candy strawberries with vanilla musk. Flirty and fun!

Apple Blossom Freesia- Reminds me of a Bath & Body Works fragrance. Fruity floral. Pretty, youthful, spring-like.

Soft Cashmere Amber- My sister made a yucky face when she smelled this, so I might be in the minority, but this is one of my all-time Better Homes & Gardens favorites. Reviewed here.

Beachwood- I expected teakwood/ozone/so fresh and so clean clean when I saw this. Nuh uh. There is a sweet musk, and floral, and coconut thing going on in there. And maybe some other tropical fruits? It really is a morphling. The more I smell it, the more it changes. Excited to melt it!

Find any cool new scents or old favorites in Walmart recently? What are some of your favorites from Better Homes & Gardens and Scentsationals?

ScentSational: Oud Noir

Oud Noir- Oriental woods, with floral and spice.

The wax world has scent trends much like the perfume world, or cosmetics with color trends. In wax there have been times when serendipity, sugar corn pudding, wildberry mousse, or cotton candy have been in high demand and frequently blended and sought after. In perfume, spurts of time passed where every new fragrance had pink peppercorn as a note, and more recently, oud(h).

Oudh in fragrance used to be harvested from a specific type of tree that had a fungal infection, then produced a resin called agarwood (or oudh). Due to endangerment, most oudh is synthetic now. To read more about this particular fragrance note visit the Fragrantica website (love that place!).

In this particular wax tart, it is not so much down and dirty oud (which smells rich, slightly dirty and musty- yes I have an oud perfume and I like it- Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Oude Arabique) but more like a dark and bass thumping Hollister store full of cologne bedecked men. Two cubes melted with a medium light throw for several hours in my bedroom.

It does smell good. Romantic even. Full of woods and dark places like the Noir suggests. But nothing like oud. At least to my nose.

ScentSationals: Anchorage Edison Warmer

ScentSationals advertised a 20% off sale in honor of Valentine's Day via Instagram a couple of weeks ago. These old fashioned multi-filament bulbs fascinate me when I see them in upscale home decor stores and restaurants. ScentSationals has a beautiful collection called "Edison" that features such bulbs, and quite a few have a decidedly nautical flare.

I chose the Anchorage warmer after some deliberations between that and the Hurricane Lantern or the Nautical warmers. The cracked aging and aqua patina were deciding factors. In a rare moment of foresight I also bought an extra bulb and in a frequent occurrence of impulsivity, I picked a wax clamshell in Oud Noir.

Here she is in all her finely aged and patina'd glory.

In her new habitat, my nightstand, she casts a beautiful glow. Now the down and dirty deets:
-It is a 40 watt bulb, so nice and hot.
-I find the lid slightly hinders throw, but I just take it off if I am melting a lighter fragrance.
-If the wax is allowed to cool and harden it pops out very easily. I was quite surprised by this. Occasionally if the wax is softer, I just remove the melting plate (bowl) and pop it in the freezer for easier wax removal.
-This is my first square warmer that the wax melts around the whole perimeter. Usually I am left with unmelted wax in the corners. Not so here.
-Normally priced at $24.99, was on sale for $19.99.
-Replacement bulbs are $4.49, was on sale for $3.59.
-Shipping was $5.99.
-I love her. She creates quite the cozy, romantic atmosphere.

Are there any warmers you have been eyeballing lately? Do you match your warmers to your home decor or go for more utilitarian features?

ScentSationals: Simple Romance

My Walmart(s) woefully lack much in the scented wax areas, but I did manage to find this lonesome fella hanging out all alone on the shelf recently. I had never crossed paths with this one before. Since Valentine's Day quickly approaches, I thought this an apt scent.

Simple Romance touts itself as a woodsy vanilla in which to set the mood. I could not agree more. The medium strong throw filled my bedroom with a soft vanilla sandalwood fragrance tempered with amber and cashmere woods.

If I spy this again, I would most certainly repurchase. I saved some cubes for the 14th ;-)

Any Valentine's plans?

Warmed Wax: Ten Digit, Better Homes & Scentsationals

Scentsationals Pretty In Pink- This tart and the one following were gifted to me by Deb (thank you!!). My Wal-Mart(s) sadly lack in the fragrance department and Deb is really sweet about sending me ones she thinks I will enjoy (and I have each time so far!). Pretty In Pink had a medium throw in my large living room/kitchen area and smelled of strawberry cotton candy to my nose. On cold I thought there was some peony lurking but when it melted all the candies poured out. Those hard oval strawberry candies with the liquid centers. Mmmmmm.... I highly enjoyed this scent but I think if peonies were added it would have been more rounded. If I ever catch this in my stores I will repurchase.

Better Homes & Gardens Sugared Lavender Twist- Sunnee called this the unicorn of the wax world and I agree. Hard to find, magically wonderful. This threw medium-strong in my bedroom and released a Pink Sugar heavy aroma that was laced with sweet mellow lavender. Repurchase if I ever find it.

Ten Digit Creations Marshmallow Fireside- A medium (in my bedroom) to medium light (in the kitchen/living room) throwing fragrance that smelled beautifully of lightly toasted creamy vanilla marshmallows with a quiet campfire accompaniment. This is one of the closer Bath & Body Works Marshmallow Fireside dupes I have encountered (along with Lasting Scent Candles). Repurchase for sure. I do wish the throw was a bit more but I still enjoy it at this level, especially in my bedroom.
