Prairie Antiques: Hand Poured Beeswax Candles & Tarts

Santa heads. And Christmas trees. In September. I need to be prepared for the holiday season. Well. In. Advance.

Remember my Etsy window shopping last weekend? Whelp. I bit the bullet and bought from two of them. One being for that cinnamon dusted black cat from Prairie Antiques. I ordered a few shapes in scents of my choice (an excellent scent list by the way) on Tuesday, they shipped Wednesday and arrived Friday. Tout suite. Another interesting tidbit. They are beeswax! What a cool texture. There is a touch of tackiness (texture, not appearance) and they are bendy so I could shape the trees at angles and stick them to the floor to make them stand.

My order arrived packaged beautifully, wrapped in maroon tissue paper and shredded paper crinkles. The wax is stored in bags fastened with gold twist ties. One came with a rustic cabin gift tag. The shapes can be either melted or displayed.

Log cabins and snowy trees (3 cabins, 5 trees) scented in Peace on Earth. These all total about 3 ounces and cost $5.95. Peace on Earth is a gorgeous blend that utilizes amber, moss and musk to elevate the woody tones of cedar, sandalwood and patchouli. One of those eye rolling scents I just absolutely adore. She lovingly dusted these will cinnamon and, I believe, flour.

Santa Claus and Christmas trees sprinkled with sugar crystals. This bundle includes 4 Santas (two of each type) and 7 trees for $6.95 and about 4 ounces total. I chose Bayberry Mint for this shape. On cold sniff the mint is hiding its icy blast and shyly contributing a sweet freshness to the bayberry. The bayberry is less green and peppery than most I have smelled and more vibrant with citrus and stewed fruits. I melted two Santas and two trees in my bedroom and they threw at a solid medium to medium-strong. Love!

Five primitive gingerbread men with aprons, 1/2 ounce each and $5.95. Pomander Spice shouted to belong to these guys. (Maybe gingerbread would have suited better, but leave it to me to ignore the obvious). Glad I chose Pomander Spice though, a nostalgic blend of dried oranges and comforting twigs of cinnamon, nutmeg nuts and star shaped cloves.

Witchy Halloween wax tablets came as a set of 5 and feature "Broom Hilda the Halloween Witch." I would guess they weigh a little more than 1/2 ounce each and cost $6.50. I chose... Witches Brew! Patchouli, cinnamon and cedarwood make up this enchanting aroma that smells like a spooky Halloween night.

Yezzzzzz. Le chat! Just the one I wanted. He's puuuuuur-fect! This cinnamon rubbed feline weighs in at around 4.7 ounces and cost $8.50. I chose Country Bumpkin as his scent and we love it. (Yes I speak for the cat). The blend of apples, yams, butter, marshmallows, brown sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves bursts with Thanksgiving aromas. The yams, apples and spices do most of the singing and it works well. Normally I hate sweet potato in wax form but the yam here smells more like the rough earthy skin rather than the soft, cooked pulp.

The beeswax contributes a richer, almost fatty undertone to the fragrance that creates depth to the scents. It probably is best to either use the cotton ball or hot pour method to remove the used wax. I did freeze and pop it out with the help of a knife but it is similar to Dessa's wax in that it does not remove easily when frozen.

Overall I am extremely happy with this order and will be keeping Prairie Antiques on my radar for quite some time.

  1. I love beeswax. At first I thought these were intended to be holiday decorations, your photos are great.

Not sure if Michael's sells wicks but when you're done melting you could pour the wax into a couple votives and burn it, it is one of those "cleans the air" waxes. Bees are so amazing.

    1. I am beginning to love beeswax too Jean! I remember getting those honeycomb sheets of beeswax as a kid and "rolling" them into candles. That texture takes me right back when I handle these tarts.

Thank you! I was so excited to photograph these guys! Sometimes the wax comes and it is mooshed or broken and then not as photogenic. These were brilliant!

I had no idea! I have a ton of empty BBW candle containers I can use. Just need to buy wicks. Thank you! Bees are pretty amazing. I fell in love with them in my entomology and agriculture classes. They are truly unique and life supporting creatures. I hope you have a great day <3

    1. I love the detail too. Not only of the molds and colors but the dustings too.

Witch's Brew is a Yankee candle dupe! I really like it. I think you would too!

  3. Country Bumpkin! I always forget about that scent, and I loooooove it.

Wow, these pics are stellar. You've just created some Christmas cards with these! And how cool are all those tarts?! The Halloween tablets are as awesome as the Christmas ones are cute.

    Nice finds!

    1. I immediately thought of you when I chose that scent. You introduced it to me!

Thank you! I was agonizing over taking pics if them but did not have the props in hand that I wanted to use. I think I may need to go antiquing. The witch tablets are so unique.

    1. Jacqui. These tarts are killing me! Cuteness overload. The owner recommends using mason jars to make them last ages. I think they are cute for display too. The beeswax formula is quite interesting! I have another vendor I am using that creates with beeswax. It might become a new trend.

    1. I cannot wait to see your order on IG! Even though I know they melt well, I am so reluctant to melt them. I just want to pet them forever. At least the cat. Thank you for your kind words. Like honey to my heart.
